BERHAMPUR: The vehicles on the national highway (NH) number 217 can hope for reduced congestion as the Berhampur National Highway Division is planning to make the width of the road at least 10 metres for the 222-km stretch from Gopalpur in Ganjam district to Tumudibandh in Kandhamal district. The NH 217 connects Gopalpur with Raipur in Chatisgarh. It was declared a national highway in 2001. According to the Executive Engineer of the Berhampur NH division, they have already taken up the work of widening the NH to at least 10 metres. The work is complete on 150 km between Gopalpur and Tumudibandh. But the irony is that 12 km of the NH 217 that passes through Berhampur is constricted at several points. There are portions of this NH inside the city where the width of the road is six or seven metres due to encroachments. Mr Sutar said efforts were on to make the uniform width of the NH inside the city at least 10 metres. Money had also been sanctioned for this purpose and a global tender been floated.
Relocation
The authorities of the drinking water supply department, power supply company, Southco, and the BSNL have been contacted by the NH authorities to relocate their wires, poles, underground cables and pipes so that the NH widening work is taken up inside the city. The district administration and the local municipality have also been approached to make arrangements so that the encroachments get removed before the widening work starts.
