State to blame for rural poverty: CPI(M)

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday accused the State Government of covering up worsening rural poverty by hyping the influx of investment proposals.

Quoting recently published National Sample Survey report, the CPI (M) state committee secretary Janardhan Pati said about 55 per cent to 57 per cent of people living in rural areas had daily expenditure below Rs 12.

``The depressing picture was evident with increasing incidents of farmers and fishermen suicides in the State. The poverty in backward KBK districts has increased from 77 per cent to 89 per cent,'' Mr. Pati said. The situation had worsened only during the rule of Biju Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party alliance that had come to power in the year 2000, he said. ``The taxes being contemplated to exempt to a foreign company could enable supply of water and electricity, provide roads and house and extend health services to 6234 gram panchayats of the state," Mr. Pati said. Opposing granting mining lease to private firms, he questioned why cannot the state government sell mineral resources through Orissa Mining Corporation. The BJD-BJP government was playing to the tune of multi-national companies while ignoring agriculture .
