CHENNAI: Renowned dancer and choreographer Chandralekha passed away at her residence here on Saturday night. She was 78.

She had been ailing for the past few months.

After an illustrious career in Bharatanatyam through 1950s and 1960s, Chandralekha caught the public imagination through her innovations and radical explorations in contemporary dance.

She bagged many honours, including the Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship and the Kalidas Samman.
