dated January 02, 1957: New Year Day on train

Prime Minister Nehru and the visiting Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, celebrated the birth of the New Year at a grand midnight party in the special train during their return journey from Nangal. The party was held in the festooned and decorated dining car of the special train. Mr. Nehru drank the toast to "Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai" and Mr. Chou En-lai to world peace. Under the lights of paper lanterns and coloured candles, Mr. Chou En-lai, Mr. Nehru and Marshal Ho Lung, the Chinese Vice-Premier, cut a New Year cake at midnight. They enjoyed songs sung by correspondents of different countries covering their visit to Nangal, wore tinsel garlands and masks, held tiny paper umbrellas and competed with their entourage in bursting balloons used for decorating the train.
