dated January 02, 1957: Trifurcation of Malabar

The Malabar district, comprising an area of 6,400 square miles with a population of roughly 51 lakhs, which until its merger with Travancore-Cochin on November 1 last was part of Madras State, was divided into three districts with effect from January 1. The trifurcation was necessitated for the intensive development of the district. The three new districts will be known as Cannanore, Kozhikode and Palghat.
