Joy short-lived

Joy short-lived

The Indian cricket team's euphoria after winning the first Test against South Africa was short-lived. The resounding win for the South Africans in Durban brought the Indians crashing down to earth. It was sheer irresponsible batting by the top order that did India in. Virender Sehwag should be replaced and the team needs to regroup well for the deciding Test.

Different norms

Barry Richards in his column (The Hindu, Dec. 21) had said that another poor performance in the second Test could see the axe descend on some household names in South Africa.

That's the difference in the outlook of the selectors there and in India. Despite a series of poor performances some of the players continue to hold their places in the Indian team. Any surprise then that India is so low in Test and ODI ratings?

Standing tall

Shane Warne decided to bow out at the top and not because he was 37-years-old. That is the Australian spirit. When he made his debut in the early 90s, none believed the leg-spinner would make such a huge impact. Not just Australian cricket but world cricket too will miss his magical deliveries.

Masterly performers

In the retirement of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, Australian cricket will miss two masterly performers. McGrath may lack the variety of Wasim Akram, the pace of Allan Donald or Brett Lee but it was with accuracy that he laid low reputations. Warne on the other hand had matchless magical fingers and was a supreme showman.
