Preserve folklore: MLC

Staff Correspondent

Janapada Jatre attracts large crowds

HASSAN: MLA H.S. Prakash said people's active participation is a must to popularise traditional arts, including Janapada.

He was addressing the gathering at the Janapada Rangotsava in Hassan on Sunday.

He promised all help for the academy to conduct Kala Mela and the annual award presentation ceremony. He said there is good response for folklore activities in Hassan. The Janapada Jatre here had attracted large crowds, he added.

MLC S.M. Anand, a chief guest, said folklore had its origin in rural areas and every effort should be made to preserve it.

Editor of Janata Madhyama, Venkatesh Murthy, said the process of modernisation had forced people work under pressure and thus folklore was neglected.

Karnataka Madhyama Academy member K.R. Manjunath regretted the neglect of traditional art such as Janapada that had its origin in the villages.

Janapada expert Metikere Hiriyanna spoke.

Unification suggested

Senior folklore expert from Sagara G.S. Bhat, who presented a paper on "Paduvalapaya Yakshagana", suggested the unification of different ranga prakaras, including folklore and Yakshagana.

He said Paduvalapaya (Yakshagana) Ranga Prakara was developed with the help of professionals and amateurs. After research, several books were published on these ranga prakaras. It was only after the arrival of thespians such as Keremane Shambu Hegde (academy chairman), Yakshagana had been ensured of security.

He said it was Shambu Hegde who gave a new dimension to professional theatre by bringing changes in stage management, seating arrangements, costumes and dances. The ranga prakara in Yakshagana is entirely different from Doddata (long play).
