ANANTAPUR: Maxim Gorky's novel translated into Telugu, `Amma', was an outstanding work in the literary world and helped readers get attracted towards revolutionary communism, speakers at a literary meeting on 100 years of Gorky's work said. Gorky had penned several memorable literary works, but of them all `Amma' was outstanding. He was the first writer who had given literature a real social outlook, they said.
Russian revolution
The success of 1917 October Revolution, which had put an end to the dictatorial and oppressive rule of Czar, and its inspiration for humane, democratic, socialist struggles later on were introduced to the world by Gorky's novel. The significance of Gorky's novel had multiplied after the disintegration of USSR to the imperialistic globalisation, they said.
Written in 1906
Gorky had written the novel during his stay in America in 1906 and it was first published by Appleton Company. Later, it was translated into several languages around the world. It was translated into Telugu by Krovvidi Lingaraju during his jail term in 1932-33 for his participation in the freedom struggle. The Telugu translation was published by Gadde Lingaiah of Adarsha Granthamandali in 1934. The ban imposed on the book by the British Government in 1935 was lifted in 1938 by the Rajaji-led Government. Divikumar and B. Suryasagar of Janasahiti, Singamaneni Narayana and others spoke.
