SYMBOL OF SECULARISM: The illuminated dargah of Sufi saint Abdul Lateef Laubali in Kurnool.
KURNOOL: The 377th death anniversary celebrations of Sufi Saint Hazrath Syed Shah Lateef Laubali concluded formally on Sunday. The celebrations started with sandal ceremony on the night of December 29. Thousands of devotees from all faiths took part in the ceremony. Present head of the order Syed Shah Abdulla Hussain Badshah Quadri officiated the celebrations while Hazrath Allama Kazim Pasha Quadri from Hyderabad took part as guest of honour and delivered the discourse. On Saturday night, poets and scholars from Hyderabad, Adoni, Raichur, Gadwal, Mahabubnagar and Bellary took part in the `Mushaira'. Devotees from various parts of the country took part in the three-day festival. The tomb of the Sufi saint is considered a symbol of secularism in the city as devotees belonging to all faiths take part in the festival and give their offerings. According to history, the saint, who was born in Hama of Syria, migrated to India with a team of 50 mendicants in his prime and settled down at Kurnool. He preached Sufism for several decades making Kurnool his home. The Trust is active in religious preaching as well as spreading education among the poor. Recently, the Trust took a decision to introduce mainstream subjects apart from the traditional subjects of a Madrasa. Also, the Trust proposed to start a pharmacy college and College of Education.
