Staff Reporter

Vishwanathan Anand gave away certificates

CHENNAI : School students from the north-eastern States stole the thunder at the finals of a digital art competition conducted by software training major NIIT at the ongoing "Kidex" exhibition of Confederation of Indian Industry at Chennai Convention Centre recently.

The winners in all three categories — sub-junior, junior and senior — were from the north and some of them were from Meghalaya and Assam. "Who would have ever thought that students from the north-east would come to Chennai and win a national-level competition," L. Balasubramanian, president, K-12 Business, pondered, while promising a much bigger competition next year.

Some of the winners, such as Bhargob Gogoi and Tanya Gupta from Uttar Pradesh, were flown into Chennai by the organisers only on the previous day of the event. Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, who is also NIIT's "mind champion," distributed certificates to the winners.

NIIT representatives said students from 30 different schools participated in the grand final of their digital art competition at the Chennai Convention Centre. Mr. Balasubramanian said that the 30 best entries were selected from digital art made by students from over 4,500 government schools and 800 private schools over the past year. `Vishy' Anand highlighted the "spirit of competition" by recalling his very first victory in a chess contest. The are: sub-junior category — Aniket Pratap Khatter of The Indian School, Delhi, followed by Tanya Gupta of Uttam School for Girls, Uttar Pradesh and Sankhamal Pal of The Aryans School in West Bengal; junior category — Marvin Kharsohnoh of Pormium Deficit Secondary School, Meghalaya, followed by Nidhi Dwivedi of Rukmani Birla Modern High School in Rajasthan and Vipul Sahu of Red Rose School in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh; senior catergory — Bhargob Gogoi of Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Assam, followed by J. Praveen Kumar Reddy of Aditya Birla Public School in Andhra Pradesh and Sumit Bedia of R. C. Agarwala Higher Secondary School in Dibrugarh, Assam.
