ON THE DRILL: Women police conducting a rehearsal for the forthcoming 150th year celebrations of the Chennai City Police scheduled for January 4, 2007 at Rajarathinam Stadium.
CHENNAI : The Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone for the proposed new building of the office of Commissioner of Police at the inaugural function (January 4) of the 150th year celebrations of the Chennai City Police, said Commissioner Letika Saran here on Sunday. Speaking to reporters, she said the CM would inaugurate a new building for the Kilpauk police station and also open four residential quarters for police personnel in the city. The CoP's office would come up at Vepery, where the office of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) functioned. On January 5, the President would participate in the concluding ceremony to be held at the Rajarathinam Stadium. Here are a few highlights and anedoctes about the city police: Chennai city has the pride of having F. V. Arul, as the vice-president of Interpol. Inspector R Rangachari represented India in cricket. Francis was a Reserve Inspector who represented the Indian hockey team as goalie in three Olympics. The stadium in Egmore inaugurated in 1956 is named after Rajarathinam, former Commissioner. K. Radhakrishnan, former Commissioner, was a creative thinker, who used to write in many Tamil journals under the pen name "Cracky". Letika Saran is the first woman to occupy the post of Commissioner of the metropolis in the country.
