Special Correspondent
Puducherry: Agriculture and Industries Minister V. Vaithilingam said here on Sunday that the Government was mulling establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Karaikal. He said that the site of Industrial Growth Centre in Polagam village in the district might be used for the project. He said that the Central Government would be approached for the approval of the proposal. The Centre had approved of an SEZ for Puducherry district and it would be established in Sedarapet in Villianoor commune panchayat limits. There might be certain teething troubles but they would be overcome as a variety of industries might come up there. There was also a proposal to create what Mr. Vaithilingam said an Agricultural Export Zone (AEZ), which could concentrate on promoting agro-based industries and agro-processing units. The 11th Five-Year Plan would focus on encouraging non-polluting industries, and necessary subsidies and incentives for entrepreneurs would also be available as per the tentative plan chalked out by the Government, he said. The AEZ would be labour intensive project, Mr. Vaithilingam claimed.
