Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: A delegation of the Puducherry unit of the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI), led by its propaganda secretary E. Thalayari, submitted a petition to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on December 30 urging utilisation of the funds meant for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes under the Annual Plans. A release from the secretary of the DPI here, Selva Nandhan, said here on Sunday that the memorandum also requested the Chief Minister to release a white paper on the quantum of money spent so far for the welfare of the downtrodden.
Housing scheme
The memorandum also said that the housing scheme now implemented by the Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare should not be entrusted to the Slum Clearance Boar. The subsidy given to the dalit families to construct houses should be raised to Rs 40,00 per family. The government was also urged to construct hostels for Dalit students currently doing professional courses in the Union Territory. Yet another plea of the delegation was that landless Dalit farmers should be granted two acre of land.
