CUDDALORE: State president of the BJP Kisan Morcha V. Kannan has urged the authorities to put on hold the implementation of the Rural Employment Guarantee Programme till the harvest season gets over. In a representation made to the Government, Mr. Kannan, who is also the president of the Kollidam-Keelanai Paasana Vivasayigal Sangham, noted that the samba harvest season would last till February 15. As of now, the farmers were finding it difficult to get adequate number of farm hands to harvest the mature paddy. Already, owing to three-year-long drought, over 50 per cent of the labour had migrated to other places or taken to construction activity. Of the remaining workforce, around 30 per cent were busy with the widening or deepening of the water sources under the job guarantee programme. Since, the remaining 20 per cent was in advanced age, they could not put in their best. Mr. Kannan pointed out that the labourers seemed to be averse to taking up farm works, because it involved eight-hour hard work, starting from early morning. They seemed to be attracted towards the job guarantee programme because the time factor was not strictly observed.
