VILLUPURAM: Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi inaugurated the free dhoti and saree distribution scheme at Vazhadareddi here on Monday. He also gave away dhotis and saris at Pidagam and T. Idayar. The Minister said as many as 8,71,317 families in Villupuram district would benefit by the scheme. The taluk-wise figures of the families to be benefited is as follows: Tindivanam - 1,14,744; Ginjee - 1,13,333; Villupuram - 1,80,671; Vanur - 45,247, Thirukkoilur - 1,05,530, Ulundurpet - 88,068; Kallakurichi - 1,19,838 and Sankarapuram - 1,03,886. The Minister said the distribution of dhotis and saris was being staggered from January 1 to 10 so as to avoid unusual crowding at the fair price shops. The tokens had already been given to the beneficiaries at their doorsteps and they would have to collect their quota from the respective fair price shops on specified dates. Dhotis and sarees would be given away at the rate of 100 each in the mornings and evenings. Mr Ponmudi said the free LPG connection scheme would start from Pongal. Those who accompanied him included District Collector Brajendra Navnit, District Revenue Officer R. Chandrasekaran and Joint Registrar of Cooperatives Sankaralingam.
