VIJAYAWADA : Good news for sports lovers of Vijayawada. The beginning of New Year has many engrossing national sports events. Top on the list is the Ranji trophy match between Andhra and Delhi, which begins on Tuesday at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium. "This is the 230th match for Andhra in Ranji championship since its formation in 1953-54," said Krishna District Cricket Association secretary Koka Ramesh on Monday. After the cricket fiesta, Andhra Pradesh Judo Association's Senior National judo championship will begin in the city on January 11 to continue upto January 15. Judokas from all over the country will take part. "For the first time in the history of Andhra Pradesh judo, a major national championship has been allotted to Vijayawada," said AP Judo Association secretary Kailash Yadav. With the guidance of district administration, the judo officials are leaving no stone unturned for the successful conduct of the event. "We have already released the publicity material, which will be displayed all over the State for many enthusiasts to witness the event," Mr. Yadav said. Meanwhile, the Krishna District Sports Authourity is making arrangements and sprucing up the DRRMC indoor stadium for the mega event.
Sankaranti gift
As a Sankaranti gift to the sports aficionados, the Andhra Pradesh Volleyball Association is organising the 33rd National Junior volleyball championship, featuring the best of young players from all over the country, from January 14 to 20 at P.B. Siddhartha Arts and Science College grounds. "The tournament will be held in four courts having the provision for flood lights. We are also preparing two courts for the team to practice at the venue," said organising secretary of the event Ankamma Choudary.
Archery
Keen to promote archery in this region, the Krishna District Archery Association has come forward to host the 27th Senior National archery championship from January 25 to 29 at NTR University of Health Sciences cricket stadium. "Thanks to Mangal Singh Champia's bronze medal winning feat at Doha Games, the sport is emerging favourite among youngsters, especially from the rural areas," association president Ch. Satyanarayana said. ANU, is hosting the South-West Zone kabaddi (women tourney) from January 1 to 5, and later hosting the all-India inter-zonal kabaddi (women) tourney from January 6 to 8.
