Lessons for future policy makers

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

NEW DELHI: Students and teachers from Harvard University, Stanford Graduate School of Business and Wharton School are using their study trips to India to gain valuable tips from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation that has through its management and project execution techniques completed Phase I of the Delhi Metro project ahead of schedule and within its budgeted cost.

This past week 36 students from the Wharton School under the University of Pennsylvania visited the Delhi Metro network. Their discussions with senior DMRC officials centred on the techniques used by the DMRC to construct the world-class Metro in a congested city like Delhi and on how it managed to complete the project two years and nine months ahead of schedule, and that too without exceeding its budget.

The DMRC informed them that its management philosophy of "time is money" is based on the cornerstones of punctuality, commitment to work and professional competence. The Delhi Metro is now due to be visited by students from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and Stanford Graduate School of Business this week.

The graduate students from Harvard University will be drawn from 20 countries and are seen as future leaders in public policy and global development.

In the past, teams from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, Indian Army and Indian Air Force have interacted with the Delhi Metro to learn about its management and project implementation techniques.
