NSS camp takes up development works

Creates awareness of conservation

KOZHIKODE: A 10-day camp of the N.S.S. unit of Providence Women's College as part of the two-month long `Sanga Yatra' at Vengeri in Ward Seven of Kozhikode Corporation ended on December 30.

The camp was part of an initiative by the NSS volunteers in association with the local people. It took up development programmes, created awareness on conservation measures and conducted a survey of the households.

The Sanga Yatra commenced on November 1 as part of the Golden Jubilee of State formation. It included diverse projects aimed at improving infrastructure in the ward.

The NSS volunteers with the assistance of the local people built a road in commemoration of the golden jubilee.

A comprehensive survey of 1,800 households in Ward Seven was carried out as part of the project. A programme called `Thaneer Sandya' was held to create awareness on conserving fresh water bodies in the ward.

Discussions were held on development of infrastructure in the ward, and a training programme was conducted on self-employment opportunities for Kudumbasree volunteers besides opening of a marketing outlet for Kudumbasree self-help group manufactured products.

A free ayurveda camp and cultural procession were some of the programmes held as part of the initiative.

Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar and poet Sugathakumri attended the programmes organised during Sangha Yatra.

K.C. Anil Kumar, councillor of Ward Seven; Shobeendran, general convener of the programme,;Sister Ancilla, Principal, Providence Women's College; and Tessy Tanjan ,NSS programme officer; provided guidance to the students. Writer P. Valsala inaugurated the camp on December 21. P.K.S. Raja Zamorin spoke.

A general medical camp, cleanliness drive at Kannadikkal, digging of rainwater and compost pits and cleaning of the riverbank were some of the activities taken up at the camp.
