EC clarifies on polls

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission has clarified that only those teachers of private institutions who are on the rolls of official records were eligible to be voters in the ensuing Legislative Council elections. In a press release, Ch. Subashchandra Bose and N. Narayana, president and general secretary, Andhra Pradesh United Teachers Federation pointed out that it would help clear the confusion surrounding the eligibility of private teachers to cast ballots. — Special Correspondent

YSR's promise on DA

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday assured leaders of the Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union that the Government would take an early decision on the release of DA dues from July 2006 to its employees. The Chief Minister released the 2007 diary and calender brought out by the union at his camp office. — Special Correspondent

KADAPA: Kuchipudi dancer Spandana bagged the first prize in South Zone Inter-University Youth Festival held at Madurai in Tamil Nadu from December 27 to 31. She is a first year MBA student of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. SVU bagged the overall championship. — Staff Reporter

Rath Yatra planned

Sangareddy: Srihari Vasam, a Balaji temple run by the MNR Medical College is organising a nine-day Ratha Yatra all through the district from Wednesday. The yatra will cover 150 villages in 18 mandals, according to a press release. Brahmotsavam will begin on January 19 after the yatra. — Staff Reporter

Teachers' plea

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Democratic Teachers' Federation has called upon the Government to secure orders from the President on local cadre organisation for teachers in view of the likely delay in the High Court ruling. The union welcomed the Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi's statement that the department would undertake temporary transfers and appointments. — Special Correspondent

Protest against Bush

TIRUPATI: Muslims in the temple city have on Monday observed the Bakrid by hanging in public the effigy of American President George Bush protesting against the "heinous murder" of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Celebrations were otherwise pleasant here. Muslims gathered in large numbers at its two major Idgah grounds offered namaaz and later greeted each other and distributed alms to the poor who lined up in front of the dargas. - Special Correspondent.

Effigies burnt

ANANTAPUR: Effigies of US President George Bush and Britain Prime Minister Tony Blair were burnt by minorities' organisations at Penukonda in the district on Monday, in protest against hanging of Saddam Hussein. Activists led by Uzrullah Khan and Ijaz Nissar took out a procession.They demanded trial of the two in front of the international courtof justicefor their crime against humanity. - Staff Reporter

Dharna by RTC staff

ADILABAD: The APSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation on Monday staged a dharna in front of the RTC depot at Adilabad protesting the closure of Utnoor RTC depot on Sunday night. The agitators said the step to close down the depot was one more step by the Government towards privatising the RTC. They said the closure of the depot would harm the interests of poor tribals who live in the agency areas. - Staff Reporter

Tanks to be repaired

WARANGAL: The district administration proposes to restore 1,014 tanks in gram panchayats in the district. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Collector K. Damayanthi said the prolonged drought led to the drying up of scores of ancient tanks. Some were grabbed or encroached upon while others were rendered useless. The rains in the recent past failed to hold promise to ryots as the tanks were obsolete and filled with silt, she said.

The programme is estimated to cost Rs. 48 crores. - Staff Reporter

Workshop concludes

MAHABUBNAGAR: Automation is need of the hour in all the industries, including power plants and sub stations, said superintending engineer, APSEB, Manohar Reddy.

Addressing the concluding function of a week-long workshop on automation and control system (ACS) at Government Polytechnic College here on Sunday, Mr. Reddy said that the workshop increases the value of students significantly and exposes them to industrial environment. He appreciated the organisers for conducting training in latest skills, which would make the students more employable. -Correspondent

Police celebrate New Year

ELURU: The police celebrated the New Year in a unique way with Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy cutting a cake in Parthi colony inhabited by 30 families of the De-Notified Tribe (DNT). Heavy rush

in temples

KHAMMAM: The Bhadrachalam temple had a steady stream of visitors on the New Year day. Many of the devotees who came to the temple for the Uttara Dwaradarshan stayed in the town for two days to spend the New Year day in the pilgrim centre.

The temples at Parnasala also had a huge rush. Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Yogita Rana deployed official teams to take stock of the facilities provided to the devotes. - Staff Reporter
