PM to arrive in Chennai today

CHENNAI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive in Chennai on the evening of January 2 from New Delhi to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress at Chidambaram the next day.

On his arrival, he will be received, among others, by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He will stay at the Raj Bhavan and attend a reception.

The next day, he will fly in a Mi-8 helicopter to Chidambaram to inaugurate the Science Congress at Annamalai University, Chidambaram. He will leave for New Delhi the same day. — Special Correspondent

Fire destroys 159 temporary shelters

NAGAPATTINAM: As many as 159 tsunami temporary shelters out of 217 near MGR Nagar here were destroyed in a fire on Sunday night.

Fire service tenders from Nagapattinam, Tharangampadi and Kilvelur put out the fire after nearly two hours.

The cause of the fire is said to be a spark from an oven in one of the shelters.

Casual workers and their families, staying in the temporary shelters, were provided shelter in a marriage hall in the town. Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan and Nagapattinam Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar rushed to the spot.

All affected families were given Rs.2000 in cash, 10 kgs of rice, a dhoti and sari set and kerosene. — Special Correspondent

Three killed in bike-lorry collision

PUDUCHERRY: Three persons were killed when the bike they were travelling in collided with a tipper lorry at around 11 a.m. near Ousteri on Monday.

Police identified the deceased as Suresh Babu (32) of Villupuram, Raju alias Thillainathan (38) of Thanarapet in Puducherry and Ravi (31) of Shanmughapuram in Puducherry. While Raju died on the way to hospital, the other two died on the spot, police said.

According to the police, Mr. Babu was riding when the accident occurred. They were travelling towards Pathukannu from Mettupalayam.

Police said the driver of the tipper lorry lost control while negotiating a curve.

A case has been booked under section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (negligent driving and causing death) against the driver. — Staff Reporter

Youth arrested

TIRUNELVELI: A police special team has arrested M. Manikandan (27) of Thiruththu, under Seevalaperi police station limits, near a stone quarry on the Thazhaiyuthu-Maanur stretch around 11.30 a.m. on Monday. The police seized two improvised airguns from him. — Staff Reporter

One killed, three injured in stampede

Tuticorin: One woman died and three others were injured in a stampede in front of a CSI church at Nazareth near here on Monday.

The police said Muthulakshmi, (50), went to the church to collect free clothes distributed by the Church to the poor as part of the New Year celebrations.

The stampede occurred after the large crowd rushedto collect the clothes, the police said.

The three women, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to different hospitals for treatment.

The Nazareth police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: Hundreds of Muslims participated in the special prayers at Municipal VOC Park and Malligai Arangam, in view of Bakrid on Monday. At the Municipal VOC Park, hundreds of men participated, and women at Malligai Arangam. Special prayers were also held in all the mosques. — Staff Reporter

Man killed

ERODE: One person was killed and three injured in a road accident on Monday. According to the police, a van with Ayyappa devotees proceeding from Chennai to Sabarimala, hit a cyclist Ariya Gounder (57) of Ammapet near Ammapet. The driver lost control, and the van halted after hitting a roadside tree. Ariya Gounder died on the spot, and three devotees were injured. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Tamil Nadu Tuberculosis Preventive Corporation granted a Certificate of Appreciation to Collector D. Karthikeyan for the highest sale of TB seal in the district. The Corporation's general body meeting was held recently at Virudhunagar, presided by its Collector Jawahar. Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran presented the certificate. On behalf of the Collector, the Deputy Director, TB Wing, A. Rajasekaran, received the certificate. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, Thudupathi, will conduct a job mela on January 6 and 7 on its college premises. In this regard, a meet was organised in the college on Sunday, in which placement officers from various colleges participated. SALEM: Police arrested two persons on charges of selling illicit liquor in Mallur near here on Sunday.

The police personnel raided Chinnaiyampalayam and Vengapuram areas and found Rathinam (35) and Ayyanar (41) selling illicit liquor. They arrested the duo. — Staff Reporter

Dies

NAMAKKAL: A labourer, Mani (24) of Lalapet in Karur district, was killed when his motorcycle lost control and hit a roadside tree near Mohanur on Monday.

Kerosene seized

Krishnagiri: District supply officials seized 250 litres of kerosene worth Rs.5, 000 meant for supply under the Public Distribution System (PDS) from a house at Pochampalli on Monday. Acting on instructions from Collector Santhosh Babu a team led by District Supply Officer S. Natarajan was conducting raids at Pochampalli when they found 250 litres of kerosene hoarded in the house of one Selvam (50). He was arrested. The Food Cell police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Training camp draws to a close

Tiruchi: The valedictory function of the Combined Annual Training Camp, conducted by the 2 TN Armoured Squadron for Senior and Junior Division NCC cadets, was held at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Mannachanallur in the district on Monday.

As many as 600 Junior Division cadets from various schools and 50 Senior Division cadets from different colleges participated in the camp, which commenced on December 22.

The Chief Educational Officer, Tiruchi, R. Muthukrishnan distributed prizes to the meritorious cadets.

Colonel M.N. Nath, Officiating Group Commander, NCC Group, Tiruchi, the Camp Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel R. Vijayakumar and Education Department officials participated.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 100.19 feet against its full level of 120 feet, on Monday.

The inflow was 1,163 cusecs and the discharge, 10,000 cusecs. — Staff

House burgled

MADURAI : Unidentified men broke into a house in Karimedu and took away 8 sovereign gold jewels, when the family members were attending midnight mass in church on the occasion of New Year.

The police said A. Vasantha Kumar and his family members of EB Colony, had left the house at 9 p.m. on Sunday and returned home at 2 a.m. on Monday. On return, they found that one of the windows was broken. The jewellery was taken from an almirah that was left open.

Special pujas

RAMANATHAPURAM : Special pujas were held at major temples of the district on the occasion of the start of the New Year.

A huge crowd was seen at Sri Ramanathasamy Temple, Rameswaram, Sri Athi Jegannathar Temple, Thirupullani, Vazhividu Murugan Temple and others from the early morning.
