Udhagamandalam: The rapidly proliferating weeds (water hyacinth) at the Ooty Lake are proving to be a difficult task to handle for the officials of the Public Works Department (PWD).

After holding discussions with the officials here on December 11, the Tourism Minister, Suresh Rajan, had announced that after the weeds were completely removed by the PWD and the job of preventing them from posing a problem would be entrusted to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), which was operating the boats at the lake.

The PWD officials had assured that the weeds would be removed by December 31. However, a good part of the lake continues to be covered by weeds. When this correspondent visited the lake on Sunday, A.K. Mishra, an engineer of the Thane-based Aireff Detox Incineration Limited, which was responsible for keeping the lake free of weeds till 2008, as per an agreement, said that though 82 labourers and necessary machinery had been engaged to remove the weeds before the end of the year, the job could not be completed since the weeds were multiplying very fast.

Middle of January

However, efforts were on to clear the water spread by the middle of January. Stating that the main problem was the entry of sewage, he said that it had also raised the pollution level. The Manager of the Boat House, G. Kannan, said that after the TTDC takes over the job of maintaining the lake, 10 workers would be pressed into service everyday to remove the weeds.
