HONOUR: Diabetologist Muralidhar Rao being conferred the Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidya Sri Award by the head of Veereshwar Punyashrama Puttaraj Gavai in Gulbarga on Monday.
GULBARGA: Head of Veereshwar Punyashrama Puttaraj Gavai conferred the P.S. Shankar Vaidya Sri Award on diabetologist Muralidhar Rao here on Monday. Along with Dr. Rao, two more medical professionals, including Guruprasad Kaginele and K. Ramananda Banari, practising in Kasaragod in Kerala were also presented the P.S. Shankar Shreshta Vaidya Sahitya Award for their books "Vaidya Mattobba and "Arogya Geete" respectively. While the P.S. Shankar Vaidya Sri Award carries a purse of Rs. 10,000, a commendation certificate and memento, the P.S. Shankar Shreshta Vaidya Sahitya Award carries a purse of Rs. 5,000 each along with a commendation certificate and a memento. The awards are given away every year on January 1 on the occasion of the anniversary of the Dr. P. S. Shankar Pratishthan, which also happens to be the birthday of well-known medical teacher and winner of B.C. Roy Award Dr. P.S. Shankar. Dr. Rao is considered a pioneer in research on diabetes in India. He has travelled widely and delivered lectures and presented papers both in India and abroad. Recognising his contribution to the field of medicine, the State Government conferred him the Rajyotsava Award two years ago. Dr. Kagineli is working as Emergency Medicine specialist in North Memorial Hospital in Minnesota in U.S. So far, 12 medical professionals who have written books in Kannada, have been conferred the Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Awards. On the occasion, first year student of JSS Medical College, Mysore, M. Latha was presented a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000 sanctioned by the pratishthan for meritorious students, hailing from poor families, till the completion of their course. So far, five students have been provided a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000. Another student Veeramma Belur, who is studying in the second year MBBS course in Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary, was presented a cheque of Rs. 5,000 sanctioned by the Sangameshwar Welfare Trust. The amount is given to bright students hailing from poor families every year. Ms. Belur is also a beneficiary of the monthly scholarship provided by Shankar Pratishthan. The day also marked the inauguration of a book exhibition and release of two books by Dr. Shankar in Kannada.
