Tribal complex to be set up in Kochi

Thrissur: Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes A. K. Balan on Monday said that a tribal complex would be set up in Kochi at a cost of Rs.5 crore. Addressing a meeting organised by the SC/ST Welfare Corporation to distribute loans and subsidies, the Minister said the complex would showcase tribal life, culture and native medical systems. He said that the corporation should start a self-financing professional college in memory of B.R. Ambedkar. - Staff Reporter

Honour for IMA State unit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Kerala State branch secretary of the Indian Medical Association R. Ramesh (Thalasserry) was adjudged as best IMA State secretary at the recently concluded 81st National Conference of Indian Medical Association in Patna. The Kerala State branch bagged honours by winning other awards. R.V. Asokan (Punalur), K. Raju Kumar (Thiruvananthapuram) and E.K. Ummer (Nilambur) and IMA Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur branches were the award winners.

Takes Charge

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : N. Jayadevan has taken charge as the Director of the Kerala State Literacy Mission. At present he is a Reader in the Politics Department of Sree Narayana College, Kollam. He was the chairman of the Kerala University Union during 1980-81 and has served as a Senate member and social science faculty member of the University of Kerala, Board of Studies member of M.G. University, research supervisor and key resource person of the People's Plan Programme. - Special Correspondent

AIYF protest march

KOCHI: Activists of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) marched to the office of City Police Commissioner in protest against the lathicharge against its activists. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse AIYF activists when they allegedly attacked Citi Bank office on M.G. Road during the hartal on Saturday following the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Hartal observed

ALAPPUZHA: A dawn to dusk hartal was observed in the district on Monday in protest against the execution of the former President of Iraq Saddam Hussein. The hartal was called by the Kerala Muslim Jama-ath Council. Shops and business establishments remained closed. Offices registered thin attendance. — Staff Reporter

Shop gutted

Thrissur: A shop owned by Pulikkottil Francis of Nedupuzha on a complex near the Thiruvambadi temple was destroyed in fire on Monday. The fire was extinguished by fire and rescue services personnel led by Thrissur Station Officer C.A. Najeeb. — Staff Reporter

28 injured in accident

Thrissur: Twenty-eight persons were injured when two buses and a car collided with each other at Thoovanur, near here, on Monday, the police said. The injured were admitted to hospitals. — Staff Reporter

Prisoner reported missing

THRISSUR: An inmate of the Viyyur Central Jail, Elavally Vallattu Reghu, was reported missing on Monday. The police said that Reghu, serving a four-year jail term, went missing between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. — Staff Reporter
