CPI(M) to suspend three local leaders

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: The CPI(M) has decided to suspend three members of the party's Nilambur area committee and censure another member for detaining Education Minister M.A. Baby at the party office at Nilambur a few days ago. Party member Joy K. Alex will be suspended for one year and N. Velukutty and T.P. Yousuf for six months. Another area committee member N. Sudhakaran will be censured.

CPI(M) activists had held Mr. Baby, who is a Central Committee member of the party, captive at the party's area committee office a few days ago. They had objected to Mr. Baby inaugurating the Akshara festival marking the culmination of the Jyothirgamaya Total Primary Education Project implemented by the Nilambur grama panchayat.

The decision to suspend the leaders came following a meeting of the Nilambur area committee here on Monday. The CPI(M) had also decided to chock out the agitation against the Jyothirgamaya project.
