`CPI(M) bid to divert attention'

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary A.N. Radhakrishnan said here on Monday that the CPI(M) was organising protests against the execution of Saddam Hussein to divert attention from groupism in the party State unit

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Radhakrishnan said though there may be reasons to protest against the killing of Saddam Hussein by the U.S-backed Iraq Government, the manner in which CPI(M) used the incident to whip up passions in the State smacked of a deliberate attempt to divert public attention from its drawbacks.

`Blow to tourism'

He said the CPI(M)-backed hartals had affected the tourism industry in the State in general, and Alappuzha district in particular. Difference of opinion in the Cabinet on the signing of agreement with the ADB indicated that the ministry did not have a unanimous stand. Mr. Radhakrishnan said the BJP State committee would meet at Palakkad on January 5, 6 and 7.
