PALAKKAD: The 50th anniversary of the formation of the present Palakkad district went unnoticed by the district administration and the district panchayat. The district was formed on January 1, 1957, by including Chittur and Nemmara areas, which were part of the erstwhile Cochin state before the formation of united Kerala. This agriculture-dominated district made progress in many fields, especially culture and literature. It is the birthplace of many artists and writers. It also made progress in agriculture and industrial fields. However, the recent crisis in the agriculture and industrial sectors slowed down its growth. Palakkad initially made major advances in the development of infrastructure but failed to keep pace with the increasing demands for road and other infrastructure facilities. On the political front, the district gifted three Chief Ministers to the State - E.M.S. Namboodiripad, E.K. Nayanar and V.S. Achuthanandan. It is the second time in recent months that the authorities have failed to remember a milestone in the development of the district. The 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Malampuzha Dam and irrigation project, the biggest in the State, went unnoticed on October 9, 2006.
