Cuttack celebrates New Year amidst fanfare

CUTTACK: Jubilations all around dominated the atmosphere in the city on Sunday night and Monday as thousands of people gathered at hotels, clubs, or family get-togethers to welcome the New Year with fun and gaiety. People in thousands thronged the places of worship as both temples and mosques in Cuttack witnessed heavy gathering.

Whereas the main temples of the city like Chandi Mandir, Gadachandi Mandir, Gadagadeswar temple and Kali temples at Khan Nagar and Kalia Buda saw the Hindus line up to offer pujas as the day was auspicious Monday and New Year's day, the Muslim brethren of the city thronged the Masjids to offer prayers on Id-ul-Zuha.

While people celebrated and made fun all through Sunday night to welcome the New Year, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city, said district SP S K Priyadarshi. At least 10 platoons of force were deployed at sensitive parts of the city and as many as 16 mobile vans moved across the city to ensure that the New Year celebrations go incident-free.

Tight security

``We have also made adequate police arrangements at major places of worship on Monday as thousands of devotees visited the temples on the New Year to offer prayers. Similarly, as the day is celebrated as Id-ul-Zuha, all the Masjids in the city were provided with guards,'' Priyadarshi informed.

All the major police stations have been provided with striking forces and a strict vigil is on at the sensitive places like Buxi Bazaar, Lalbagh, Malgodown and Chauliaganj area. Two special PCR Mobile vans are deputed to touch all the places of worship where there is heavy rush, the SP added.
