CHENNAI : Sri Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj of K. K. Nagar honoured M. Murali, managing director of Sri Krishna Sweets for the service he rendered to art and culture last year. He was conferred with the `Sangeetha Kala Seva Rathna' by K. Parasaran, former Attorney-General. The award comprised a citation and a medal.

Mr. Parasan said the award was a befitting way to honour Mr. Murali who had executed a thought. Mr. Murali's organisation had hosted 615 cultural programmes in the city for the whole year of 2006 under `Chennai 365 Naal thorum nallathu seivom' (A good deed every day) plan.

Mr. Parasan said "we must celebrate the thought he has executed. Society is obliged to thank him for his gesture. The title is a manifestation of our appreciation."

M. Nageswaran, general manager (regional services), Indian Oil Corporation, said the philosophy of marketing was to sell old ideas using novel means. Sri Krishna Sweets was doing just that.

M. B. Nirmal, founder of Exnora International, a non-government organisation working for cleanliness in the city, said, "if people like us have done a good job then it is because of friends like Murali.

He provided tree guards for our tree planting drive." Nagai Mukundan, who delivers religious discourses, recalled Mr. Murali's service to create a beach patrol comprising fishermen who had saved 57 people last year from drowning in the Elliot's Beach.

Mr. Murali thanked his family, employees and all sabhas, and people for their "total cooperation''. K. Venkataraman, president, and Narayanan, secretary of the sabha, also spoke.
