For Tiruvottiyur, New Year begins with a hopeful note

Staff Reporter

Several projects ready for implementation

CHENNAI : Residents of Tiruvottiyur have another reason to feel happy in the New Year. For, the municipality would get a facelift with several projects lined up to be started right from the New Year Day.

It would be a healthy start for the residents as the municipality planned to introduce the source segregation of garbage from Monday. With a population of 2.25 lakh generating about 90 tonnes of garbage daily, the local body would have collection of biodegradable and non-degradable items from the 48 wards.

A municipal official said the civic body that merely dumped the garbage at the 12-acre compost yard in Santhankadu near Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited would now comply to Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2000.

Sivasubramanian, Municipal Commissioner, said that awareness meetings were held for representatives of residents' welfare associations and councillors, apart from distributing pamphlets elaborating on source segregation. At present, 19 wards were privatised for garbage collection and disposal.

This project would also add revenue of about Rs.10,000 to the municipality as there were plans to sell recycled waste, he said.

The underground sewerage project, which has Chennai Metrowater as an implementing agency, was also expected to start in January.

Tenders were under scrutiny and work order for laying pipeline would be issued shortly.

The New Year would bring in double delight for the residents of Tiruvottiyur as the water supply would be doubled with a project lined up to begin in the coming months.

Now, the area is supplied 25 lakh litres per day, which does not match the demand of 180 LLPD.

The municipality plans to provide 50 LLPD of water through the water supply improvement project. The project would include construction of sumps. The supply would be augmented in the coming years, a municipal official said.
