HYDERABAD: Tens of thousands of Muslims offered prayers at idgahs and mosques on Id-ul-Zuha, the festival of sacrifice, on Monday in the twin cities, as the police kept a close vigil and blocked several roads to facilitate offering of prayers.

Several roads traversing through the old city were declared no-vehicle zones or allowed only unidirectional vehicular traffic as Muslims streamed out on to the streets during prayer time. There was no problem anywhere. Policemen continue their vigil from Sunday night.

The biggest congregation was at the idgah at Mir Alam on the city outskirts and prayers at other idgahs in the city too recorded maximum attendance. Mecca Mosque and other mosques in the twin cities were packed. Mostly clad in white, the `namazis' began greeting each other and their friends irrespective of the religions after the prayers.

The police were extra careful in view of the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. The general resentment against the hanging of Saddam Hussein was evident when youngsters burnt a US flag at Idgah Maidan in old city.
