Two New Year revellers killed in accidents

Staff Reporter

Four more persons killed in past two days

HYDERABAD: Two persons, who were returning home after New Year's party in the wee hours of Monday were killed when a lorry hit their motorcycle near Balanagar crossroads. The victims were identified as Kiran and Sharath, both aged 20 years and working as collection agents with ICICI Bank.

The duo, along with their friend Umesh, 19, partied at the house of Kiran's elder brother at Balkampet till 2.30 a.m. While Umesh escaped with minor injuries, the other two died on the spot.

Lorry driver Y. Saidulu, 24, while trying to flee, hit another motorcyclist, Narsing, near HAL main gate. Narsing was shifted to Gandhi Hospital with serious injuries. A police party posted at Balanagar crossroads chased the lorry driver and caught him near Gudenment. He was remanded to judicial custody.

Collision

A goldsmith Ramakrishna, 21, who too was heading to his house in Kachiguda on a bike after attending a New Year's party, fell unconscious after ramming into an oncoming bus at Chikkadpally. His friend Jagan, who was sitting on the pillion, escaped with minor injuries.

"Ramakrishna was waving his hands wishing passers-by a `Happy New Year' and collided with the RTC bus," Chikkadpally Inspector V.N.V. Satyanarayana said. Doctors said Ramakrishna's condition was critical.

Lowest figure

Except the road accident near Balanagar crossroads, no other fatal accident connected to New Year revelry was reported anywhere in the city. This was the lowest figure compared to the large number of fatal accidents reported during New Year celebrations over the past few years.

Police officials said controlling drunken driving, not allowing triple riding on two-wheelers and checking rash driving by inspecting vehicles at several points helped in preventing accidents.

Four more persons, including a first year student of Spoorthi Engineering College and a housewife named Praveena, were killed in road accidents in and around the city in the past two days. A mini-bus hit the motorcycle from behind leaving the housewife, sitting on the pillion, dead at Dharam Karam road in Ameerpet. Siva Kumar, her husband, who was riding the bike, sustained serious injuries. A Maruthi van hit a pedestrian Ramakrishna, 61, from behind near Sushma Theatre in Vanasthalipuram. The victim, a painter hailing from Krishna district, came to Autonagar in search of work and was crossing the road when the accident occurred.

Later in the evening, a first year student of Spoorthi Engineering College, Karthik Mahadev, 19, died and his friend Bharat Chandra, a medico, suffered injuries, when the motorcycle on which they were travelling skidded on the road between Nagargual and Badangipet on city fringes.

In another accident, a motorcyclist Ghulam Rasool, 22, died when a truck knocked him down while he was passing by the traffic signal lights at Aramghar crossroads in Rajendranagar around 9.30 p.m. The victim was a student of Anwarul Uloom College, the police said.
