One arrested

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: One person was arrested on charges of destroying private property at Fort Kochi on New Year eve.

The incident happened when a group of people attempted to stop the New Year celebrations to protest against the execution of the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The police said that the person arrested was Rishad, 24, of Calvethy, Mattanchery.

Hotels damaged

A couple of hotels, some shops and the office of the Coast Guard were damaged in the incident on Sunday night.

Intensive searches were conducted at various parts of Fort Kochi and Mattanchery following the incident. More arrests would be made soon, said the police.

There was some confusion regarding the carnival rally also, as there were demands to cancel the rally this year. The police presence in the area was stepped up in anticipation of violence.

Senior police officers including the City Police Commissioner; Deputy Commandant, Armed Reserve Camp, Ernakulam; and Assistant Commissioners of Police were present at Fort Kochi.

The carnival rally was taken out though with a change in the route.
