KOCHI: Ramban Elias Kozhiparampath was consecrated bishop of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church on Monday by Catholicos Baselios Thomas I at a well-attended ceremony at the Patriarchal Centre, Puthencruz, near here on Monday. The new bishop took the name Elias Mar Athanasios and would head the Committee for Preservation of Faith (Antioch) Vishwasa Samrakshana Samithy. Joseph Mar Gregorios, Synod Secretary, Geevarghese Mar Athanasios and representative of Antioch Kuriakose Mar Theophelus led the ceremonies that were attended by about 20 bishops. The consecration was followed by distribution of financial assistance sponsored by St. Mary's Church, Sharjah, to poor couples. Aid of Rs.50,000 each was given away to 60 couples. Fifty sewing machines were also given away at the function. A meeting to felicitate the new bishop, that followed, was inaugurated by Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvilla. The Catholicos presided. Convener of the United Democratic Front P.P. Thankachan, Jose Thettayil, K. Babu, K.V. Thomas and M.M. Monayee, MLAs, and the former Irrigation Minister T.M. Jacob were among those who offered felicitation. Leaders of the Vishwasa Samrakshana Samithy John Punnamattam and Moncy Vavachan presented the Staff and Cross to the new Bishop at the function.
