KOCHI: The pulse polio immunisation programme will be held on January 7 and February 11 as part of the National Polio Eradication Programme. Started in 1994, the programme initially found some success but of late there had been a number of doubts raised about the programme. There were 4,791 cases in 1994, which came down to 2,489 in 1997, 1,600 in 2002, 225 in 2003 and 135 in 2004. However, in 2006, 624 cases were recorded. According to K.T. Remani, District Medical Officer, there was no report of any polio case in South India in the last five years. All the cases reported were from the northern belt. The oral vaccine given to children up to five years on the fixed date was expected to produce enough anti-virus bodies in the atmosphere that it would prevent the wild virus from entering not only the vaccinated host but also the other hosts.
Special meeting
In the district, a special meeting would be held at General Hospital at 10.30 a.m. and at Edappally Hospital at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in connection with the programme. Participants would include councillors, health inspectors, representatives of Indian Medical Association, Kudumbashree volunteers, representatives from private hospitals and Rotary clubs.
