Schools arts fete begins today

Staff Reporter

More than 3,000 students to participate

KOCHI: Thousands will participate in a colourful procession marking the official inauguration of the Ernakulam district revenue schools arts festival at Muvattupuzha on Tuesday.

More than 3,000 students, who won top honours in the educational sub-district arts festivals held earlier, will participate in the event. Competitions will be held in categories that include upper primary, high school, TTI, and PPTTI.

Cultural and literary events will be held at eight venues set up at Government Model High School at Muvattupuzha. The arts festival will kick-off with a procession that will begin from the Municipal Town Hall at Muvattupuzha.

Traditional cultural and folk items and tableaux depicting the social and political events in the country will be the major highlight of the procession. Band performance by select students will add rhythm to the event. Members of the NCC and Scouts unit will march to the rhythm created by the band teams.

Elaborating on the preparations for the event, Deputy Director of Education (Ernakulam) Baby Usha Kiran said that all arrangements were made for the smooth conduct of the festival.

She said the literary and band competitions, scheduled for Tuesday, were postponed in view of the public examinations being held at various schools in the district.

These items would now be held on January 6. The number of students participating in the procession might not touch the expected figures, as many students had to attend the examination in the afternoon.

The procession would conclude at the main venue.

Sarma to inaugurate

At a public function to be held at Government Model High School, Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma will inaugurate the 19th edition of the Ernakulam District schools arts festival. Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvila will be the chief guest.

Before the public function, a welcome song composed by 19 music teachers representing various schools in the district will be presented.

Thripunithura Narayanan Nair and team will present a variety of dishes for the thousands attending the cultural and literary event. Food will be served at Nirmala Higher Secondary School at Muvattupuzha.
