Bangalore: While a few people in the city ushered in the New Year quietly by paying visits to their friends and going to places of worship, for many it started on a bad note. Many New Year revellers who were out on the streets late on Sunday night found themselves on the wrong side of the law, while some of them were injured in road accidents after reportedly having a little too much to drink. Vinita's (name changed) New Year's Eve party was spoilt when she was injured in a road accident on her way to a bash on Sunday evening. She was riding on her two-wheeler on Indiranagar 100 feet Road at around 8.30 p.m. when some early revellers on a motorcycle, possibly drunk, jumped the median and dashed into her vehicle. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Manipal Hospital, where her wounds were dressed and she was sent back. According to Manipal Hospital authorities, the hospital casualty had received at least a dozen cases wherein people had been injured because of drunken driving. Most of them had reportedly suffered bruises while riding their vehicles as they were reportedly in an inebriated state. "Usually we receive at least seven to 10 such cases on weekends, as most people party late on Saturdays and Sundays and get drunk and drive, landing in trouble. Some of them even seem to be mentally imbalanced because of heavy drinking and we give them necessary treatment and send them home," a hospital staff informed.
Blood test
In the Government-run Victoria Hospital, four persons, who had been detained by the police for drunken driving at different instances, were brought to the casualty wing of the hospital between 1.30 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Monday for a blood test to check the alcohol content in their body. They were reportedly New Year revellers. A total of eight accident victims were treated at the hospital between Sunday night and the early hours of Monday. At HOSMAT Hospital, which is close to the central business district, four persons were treated for injuries sustained after they fell from their two-wheelers in separate incidents. They were riding after consuming alcohol, hospital authorities said.
