Two acquitted in blackmail case

New Delhi: Two persons, accused of blackmailing a Delhi Police woman constable by taking her obscene photographs, have been acquitted by a city court after it noted that the victim's testimony appeared to be doubtful. "The testimony of the woman seems to be doubtful in view of the fact that even on November 30, 1998, the day her alleged obscene photographs were taken, she was found to be neither on leave nor absent from her duties," Additional Sessions Judge, Fast Track Court, Bharat Parashar said in his order.

"It was incumbent upon the prosecution to prove this important aspect of the case," the ASJ added, while acquitting Badri Nath Sahni and Nirmala Devi of the charges under various sections of the IPC.

Games village site draws flak

New Delhi: The DDA's proposed Commonwealth Games village on the banks of Yamuna river in east Delhi is under the scanner of water resource experts who warn that it would destroy aquifers of the area that meet the city's water needs. They have cited a notification issued by the Central Ground Water Authority in 2000 that declares the Yamuna flood plain area within the National Capital Territory of Delhi a "notified area" and prohibits construction, installation and drilling of any new structure for extracting groundwater resources there.

The Water Resources Ministry had identified the acquifers underlying the entire flood plain of the Yamuna within the NCT of Delhi as potential aquifers for developing and managing groundwater resources to meet drinking and domestic needs of the city, said Vinod Jain of NGO Tapas.
