This Day That Age
President Nasser has abrogated Egypt's 1954 treaty with Britain on the Suez Canal base, Cairo Radio announced on January 1. The agreement, signed in Cairo in October 1954, provided that all British forces should evacuate the Canal Zone in the following 20 months. But it gave Britain permission to leave 4,000 civilian technicians to maintain its bases in the Zone. Britain was also allowed to return to the Canal Zone bases in the event of an armed attack on Turkey or any of the Arab League nations. In London, a Foreign Office spokesman said Britain did not accept the right of Egypt to abrogate the agreement unilaterally.
