This Day That Age
The Government of India have prepared a tentative 18-point programme to celebrate the centenary of the 1857 uprising. The programme is based on suggestions made by a sub-committee of the Congress constituted in 1955 with Dr. K.N. Katju, Defence Minister, as Chairman. Highlights of the programme are: erection of a memorial to Rani of Jhansi and those who lost their lives in Allahabad and Lucknow in the 1857 uprising, grant of general amnesty to prisoners and issue of special symbolic Independence stamps without reference to personalities.
