Curbing road accidents

While inaugurating the 18th Road Safety Week programmes in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas stressed the need for strict compliance with traffic rules and other road safety measures to reduce the number of road accidents. Kerala, he said, had the "dubious honour" of having the third highest number of road accidents in the country.

During the inaugural ceremony, film clips on the dangers of speeding were shown. As the Minister was making his point on road safety, a wit in the audience was heard wondering aloud who would point out to the Ministers the speeds at which their official vehicles travelled and the need for those vehicles too to follow traffic rules on the roads.
