POLLUTING POINT?: Effluents flowing into Pichaikaranpallam Odai at Malligai Nagar, near Erode. - Photo: M. Govarthan
ERODE: Though the deadline fixed by the Madras High Court for tanners and dyers to erect reverse osmosis plants to ensure zero discharge ended on December 31, the Pichaikkaranpallam Odai running on the North West of Erode continues to receive untreated effluents. The Odai joins the River Cauvery, the water of which is used for drinking in Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Trichirapalli and other districts. The contaminated water flows from Periyasemur and some other villages located on Erode-Chitode main road. Pollution Control Board officials said they were doing a survey on the industries that had not erected the RO plants and issued notices to more than 150 dyeing units about a month ago. But still the industries are discharging the untreated effluents into the Odai. Farmers here said barring a few industries, many tanning and dyeing units continued the practice. They and others appealed to the district administration to close down such erring industries. The tanners and the dyers would file a petition in the Madras High Court on Tuesday or Wednesday seeking to extend the time till June 2007 for erection of the RO plants.
