Undertrial's death triggers riots in sub-jail

DAVANGERE: An undertrial at the Davangere sub-jail died under mysterious circumstances triggering riots in the sub-jail on Monday.

The name of the undertrial was given as Manjanaik (30) of Chikkaabigere. He was facing charge of robbery in 14 cases in Davangere, Kundapura, Shimoga and Chitradurga. He and his two brothers, Tippesh and Dharana, had been in jail.

His brothers suspected that Maharudra, another brother of Manjanaika, could have given him poisoned food. Maharudra and Manjanaika had quarrelled over property disputes many times. Maharudra had brought lunch for Manjanaika on Monday. According to jail authorities, they had sent Manjanaika to hospital after finding writhing in pain in the evening. They said that he had been suffering from gastric ulcer for some time.
