Two farmers commit suicide

GULBARGA: Two farmers in the district have committed suicide by consuming poison in the past two days. While mounting debts and failure of red gram crop forced 68-year-old Shankarappa Biradar hailing from Srichand village in Aland taluk to take the extreme step, it is not known why Shivappa Pujari (40) from Honnakirnagi in Gulbarga taluk committed suicide. Sources said here on Tuesday the reason for the death of Shivappa Pujari was not known. — Special Correspondent

Kirimanjeshwara peaceful

Udupi: Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao said on Tuesday that the situation in Kirimanjeshwara village, under Byndoor police station limits, where there was tension on Monday following incidents of cow slaughter, was peaceful and under control. He told The Hindu that three more cases had been registered and three persons were arrested on Tuesday. The police had arrested 19 persons on Monday. BU convocation

BANGALORE: The 42nd annual convocation of Bangalore University will be held on Saturday at Jnana Jyothi Sabhangana on the Central College campus. A release said winners of Ph. D. degree, winners of gold medals and prizes can collect the invitation and entry pass from the office of the Registrar (Evaluation), Natural Science Block, Central College. Woman commits suicide

RAICHUR: Sakkubai (41), wife of L. Sakrya Naik, Assistant General Manager (Finance) of the Raichur Thermal Power Station, reportedly committed suicide in her house at the staff quarters in Shakthinagar near here on Monday. The Shakthinagar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Missing child found dead

BIDAR: A missing child was found dead in a septic tank at Ballur village in Aurad taluk. Police said 18-month-old Ganesh Parameshwar Patil had been missing from Monday. His body was found in the family's septic tank on Tuesday morning. A case has been registered in the Santhpur Police Station. Police have not ruled out kidnap and murder. Superintendent of Police Roopa Divakar has formed a special team to investigate the case, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Dies of burns

RAICHUR: Moulanbee (30), wife of Khajasab, reportedly died of burns when a stove burst while she was cooking, in Manvi town on November 29. She was treated at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital here where she died on Tuesday. The Manvi Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Bus services

HUBLI: North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation will run a total of 300 special buses till January 10 for the benefit of the pilgrims visiting Savadatti and Badami for the jatras of Yallammadevi and Banashankaridevi. These buses will be run from the NWKRTC divisional headquarters at Gadag, Bagalkot, Belgaum, Hubli and Chikkodi, chief traffic manager has said in a release. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Mysore Babbur Kamme Sangha has invited applications for the academic year 2006-07 from Brahmin Babbur Kamme students studying in schools and colleges and whose parents' annual income is Rs. 60,000 a year or below.

Trekking camps

MYSORE: The Society for Promotion of Adventure and Natural Awareness (SPAN) is organising its 15th National Himalayan Trekking Expedition to Dzongri Top in Kanchenjunga mountain range of Sikkim for those aged from 12 to 18. The 22-day programme begins on April 11 and includes trekking and camping, nature orientation and leadership activities. Registration should be done before January 25.

SPAN will also organise a five-day trekking, nature orientation and leadership camp for children aged between 10 and 16 in the Western Ghats in April 2007.

Music programme

MYSORE: The Mysore Ananthaswamy Memorial Trust will organise a music programme on January 9 at Vasudevacharya Bhavan (Sree nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha) to mark the 11th death anniversary of the noted musician Mysore Ananthaswamy. Musician and composer Raju Ananthaswamy and his students will sing popular songs of Mysore Ananthswamy that day.
