`Awareness on road safety measures crucial'

Police should conduct awareness programmes regularly



ENTHUSIASTIC GROUP: Schoolgirls take out an awareness rally as part of the National Road Safety Week in Hubli on Tuesday.

HUBLI: Creating awareness on road safety measures and traffic rules has become crucial in the wake of increasing mortality rate in accidents, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar has said. Inaugurating the "National Road Safety Week" at the Lamington High School here on Tuesday, the district-in-charge Minister said change in lifestyle had led to increase in stress, which is also one of the reasons for the road accidents.

He underscored the need for following traffic rules and implementation of the same by the police personnel. He said the programmes should be not be restricted to a week and asked the police personnel should conduct such programmes at regular intervals.

Citizens' cooperation

He said the citizens should cooperate with the police personnel in this regard. The Municipal Corporation had also a major role to play in road safety. It should take steps to ensure proper maintenance of roads and footpaths, he added.

The district-in-charge Minister said the twin cities required construction of flyovers and an international airport, which he said, would go a long way in the overall development of Hubli-Dharwad in the future.

Earlier he inaugurated the awareness rally organised as part of the programme.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Dileep elaborated on the various programmes that would be held during the road safety week. Eye check up and blood test of vehicle drivers, competitions for school children, workshop on road safety for college students would be held during the week, he said.

Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani welcomed the gathering. Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar, Commissioner of Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation P. Manivannan, DCPs D. Prakash (Law and order), I.F. Dafedar (DAR) and others were present. Regional Transport Officer Karim Baig proposed the vote of thanks.
