COLOMBO: The LTTE is to issue `national identity cards to all citizens of Tamil Eelam." An LTTE statement said the "civil administration" in its administered regions in northeast has launched "Tamil Eelam National Registry of Persons" on January 1. It said the first card was issued to its leader Velupillai Prabakaran. TamilNet said the card would function as the Social Security Number (SSN) as used in many western democracies. A Tamil Eelam national registration number is to be assigned to each person to strengthen the effectiveness of a computerised administration.
