Gangtok-Nathu La road to be widened

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu has sanctioned the widening and improvement of the class-9 Gangtok-Nathu La road in Sikkim to 2-lane for a 37-km stretch out of its total 61 km between the Tashi view point near Gangtok and Nathu La. The Minister also approved Rs. 449.19 lakh for road improvement works at several National Highway stretches in Tamil Nadu.

While the Gangtok-Nathu La work will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 263.6 crore under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for the North Eastern Region (SARDP-NE), the remaining stretch of 24 km will be considered for approval later after the project preparation is completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The BRO will start the work on the approved 37 km length to construct the road to international standards.

In Tamil Nadu, besides the reconstruction of 24 RCC slab culverts between km 59/0 to km 65/0 of NH 210 between Namanasamudram and Thirumayam in Pudukottai district at a cost of Rs. 317.80 lakh, approval has also been given for rebuilding culverts at km 107/2 and 114/2 of NH-208 between Idaikkal and Kadayanallur in Tirunalveli district at a cost of Rs. 27.23 lakh.

Also reconstruction of culverts at km 212/2, km 214/10 and km 215/6 and construction of retaining wall in km 216/230-390 of NH 208 between V.Ammapatti and Kunnathur in Madurai district lakhs has been cleared.
