Ashok Kumbhat dead

Ashok Kumbhat

CHENNAI: Ashok Kumbhat, chartered accountant and sports administrator, passed away here on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 72 and is survived by his wife and three daughters.

A popular personality, Mr. Kumbhat held key positions in sports, industry and professional bodies. His views on taxation were widely respected.

A former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (1982-83), the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce (1987-89) and the Cosmopolitan Club in Chennai, he was a former secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He was also the executive committee member of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He served as a member of the Tariff Advisory Committee.

Mr. Kumbhat was the incumbent president of the Tamil Nadu chapter of the All-India Tax Payers Association, the South India Athletic Association, and the Madras United Club.

An active promoter of cricket, and secretary for nine city league teams, Mr. Kumbhat was elected treasurer, TNCA, in 1987 and served as its secretary from 1995 to 2002. As member of the finance and headquarters committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, he managed the Indian team in the triangular series at Sharjah in 1998.

"A void"

TNCA president N. Srinivasan said in his condolence message: "Kumbhat was always cheerful and considerate to his colleagues and friends. The void caused by his death will be difficult to fill."

People close to Mr. Kumbhat said he was admitted to hospital on Saturday after he complained of uneasiness and high blood pressure. Subsequently, he lapsed into a coma. The cremation took place in the evening.
