PROMOTING SAFETY: Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner, and Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, inaugurating `Traffic Week' in Bellary on Tuesday.
BELLARY: Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner, has called upon the police and educational institutions to educate children on road safety. Inaugurating Traffic Week here on Tuesday, Mr. Srivastav said teachers should educate children about the importance of road safety and the need to follow traffic rules. He said the police should identify accident zones. Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, who presided over the vent, said that thrust was being laid on three "Es" - Education, Enforcement and Engineering - in a bid to bring down the accident rate. Appealing to the public to extend their cooperation to the police by following traffic rules, he said nearly 300 people were killed and over 2,500 persons were injured every year in road accidents that occurred in Bellary district. In 2004, there were 249 fatal accidents, 1,704 non-fatal accidents, 275 persons were killed and 2,406 persons injured. In 2005, fatal accidents reported was 237, non-fatal 1,860, 259 persons killed and 2,466 were injured. In 2006 (up to November) the district recorded 215 fatal accidents, 1,533 non-fatal accidents, 247 persons were killed and 2,690 persons injured. He said the number of cases and the fine collected under Indian Motor Vehicles Act was on the rise. In 2004, around 25,529 cases were booked and a fine of Rs. 36.09 lakh was collected. D.C. Rajappa, Additional Superintendent of Police, spoke. Mohammed Habibullah Khan, Regional Transport Officer, was among the guests. A.M. Nadaf, Deputy Superintendent of Police (City) welcomed the gathering and Pampapati, ARTO, proposed a vote of thanks.
