Letters to the Editor
The happenings in the Park Street police station of Kolkata where army personnel beat up policemen and freed their colleagues after forcing open the lock-up (Jan. 2) are unfortunate and reflect poorly on the men in uniform. The entire episode is the result of ego clash. The West Bengal Government should find out why the military authorities were not informed about the alleged misbehaviour of the two officers well in time. The army men would do well to remember that while dealing with civilian authorities, they should be courteous. Both the armed forces and the police are parts of the government machinery and must work in harmony, instead of washing their dirty linen in public.

Pune * * * The behaviour of the army personnel is shocking. Such officers bring a bad name to the entire army. Incidents of highhandedness by army personnel are not uncommon. In fact, I was witness to one such incident recently. The army men are proud of their occupation and so is the nation. They should set an example in everything they do. The authorities should take strict action against the erring personnel so that it serves as a lesson to their colleagues and assures the civilians that the men in uniform deserve the respect and concern they are extended.
