Singur: AIFB regrets lack of transparency

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The All-India Forward Bloc (AIFB) on Tuesday welcomed the proposal to set up a car manufacturing plant at Singur in West Bengal's Hooghly district. However, it regretted "certain lapses in procedural matters" in the course of acquiring land for the project.

Debabrata Biswas, AIFB general secretary, told The Hindu here that his party welcomed the State Government's move towards industrialisation in the Singur region but it "was regrettable that there was a lack of transparency" in the land acquisition process. "This had led to some confusion within the ruling Left Front in the State."

The AIFB's central secretariat and the central committee would meet here for three days from Wednesday. Besides organisational matters, the national and international situation and socio-political issues would be reviewed.

"As a matter of policy, we are opposed to the setting up of special economic zones," Mr. Biswas said. "However, the Left coordination committee has submitted a nine-page note to the Centre on the matter and this should be adopted as the guiding principle."

Need for unity

He stressed the need for "unity among the different Left parties" in the coming Assembly elections in Punjab, Manipur, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh.
